CHANNEL SURFERS

Hello all ~

This month we’re hosting a night of experimental live musical performance with live scores to two experimental films.

Leanna Kaiser presents her latest work CHANNEL SURFERS – an experimental and improvisational live scoring ensemble that brings together musicians of various backgrounds to create new soundscapes while exchanging instruments throughout the duration of the piece. Live score performed by Leanna Kaiser, Jorge Ravelo, Matt Popieluch, Carolina Hicks, Augie Calabro and Kit Lamb.

Jorge Ravelo will also present SQUARE DANCE, where he will perform live instrumentation to a 16mm projection performance of people dancing in a house, originally meant to be screened only at that house. Secretly, it’s about a reaction to an intense depressive episode that night. On the surface, it’s about forcing something (an image, a moment) organic to happen.

After the performances we will have a conversation with Leanna, Jorge and the other musicians around experimentation with live scoring moving images.

Leanna Kaiser is an experimental musician and filmmaker from St. Louis, MO currently living in Los Angeles, CA. She recently graduated with an MFA from CalArts’ Program in Film and Video. Her film work focuses on personal interpretations of experiences, and is largely improvisational in both sound and image. She works in both 16mm film and digital video as well as using analog effects processors in many of her pieces. In 2018 she was selected as a fellow for Doc’s Kingdom Documentary Seminar in Arcos de Valdevez, Portugal, and in 2019 she was a recipient of the Alison Doerner Fund for Women Pioneers in Filmmaking.

Jorge Ravelo is a multidisciplinary artist mostly working in a varying range of video and cinematic genres that go from the incriminatingly personal to the ambiguously political. He is currently studying Film/Video at CalArts. He resides in Val Verde, CA and lives with his cat Bill.
